Lawrence Konner is an American writer and producer for both film and television. He was a co-executive producer for the first season of Boardwalk Empire in 2010. He wrote two episodes for the season. His television career began in 1976 and he has worked on a wide variety of projects. He also wrote for the HBO drama The Sopranos.
Biography[]
Earlier career[]
Konner began his career as a television writer. He worked on the shows Little House on the Prairie, Family and Remington Steele. He formed a movie-writing partnership with Mark Rosenthal. They first worked together on the motion picture The Legend of Billie Jean, which garnered a cult following on video. This was followed by the films The Jewel of the Nile, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, as well as the updated versions of The Beverly Hillbillies, Mighty Joe Young and Planet of the Apes. Other screenplays include Mona Lisa Smile, Flicka, and Mercury Rising.
In 2001 Konner joined the crew of HBO drama series The Sopranos as a writer for the third season. He wrote the episode "Second Opinion" co-wrote the season finale "Army of One" with the creator David Chase. "Second Opinion" was directed by Tim Van Patten (executive producer on Boardwalk Empire). "Army of One" featured future Boardwalk Empire star Michael K. Williams in a co-starring role as a drug dealer called Ray Ray. Konner was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramatic Writing for "Second Opinion". Konner returned as a writer for the fourth season of The Sopranos and wrote the teleplay for the episode "Mergers and Acquisitions" from a story by Chase, Terence Winter, Robin Green & Mitchell Burgess. Winter went on to create Boardwalk Empire.
Boardwalk Empire[]
Konner worked as a co-executive producer and writer for the first season in 2010. He co-wrote the fourth episode "Anastasia" with supervising producer Margaret Nagle and wrote the fifth episode "Nights in Ballygran". He left the crew after the first season. The first season writing staff won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best New Series in 2010.
Later career[]
Konner went on to develop Magic City, an original series for the Starz network.
